Jaanapada Suggi

As a part of its legacy, BMS College for Women (BMSCW) organized a day long annual cultural event JaanapadaSuggi on 26th February 2019 in the College

Objectives:

  • To spread awareness and inculcate the folk values as a part of institutional social responsibility.
  • To create rural folk art and atmosphere in the city.
  • To give awareness about folk culture in Karnataka.

The Context

Indian folk culture has a great legacy and is a matter of pride which should be carried from generation to generation by recreating a rustic environment in the midst of the city. BMSCW has taken the initiative to spread awareness and inculcate the folk values as a part of institutional social responsibility.

Folk forms performed by the students are Veeragase Kunitha, Dollu Kunitha, Pata Kunitha and Kolaata, Kamsaale. Benguluru Karaga was recreated by our students. Keelu Kudure of Karnataka was the special feature. Ummathaata, the traditional dance of Kodagu was also performed.

The students had created a traditional Santhe where they were dressed traditionally and used colloquial language to bring in the rural atmosphere. There were different varieties of vegetables and fruits sold. The Chief Guest purchased few vegetables.

There were numerous stalls set up by the students which included food, ornaments and traditional/ folk art form. They were also named traditionally like Thampu Hatti, Thindi Katte, Gramena, Thindi Mane, Swaad Sadan, Halli Thindi, Namma Halli Swad, Chatpata Chat etc.. Colourful stalls sold homemade traditional dishes like Gulab Jamoon, Ragi mudde, Puliogre , different varieties of chats, drinks etc. Girls got their hands coloured in different designs with Henna. Many stalls sold hand crafted and fancy jewellery.

Traditional games were an added attraction. Games like Kuntebile, Bugri, Lagori, Pagade, Alegule Mane, Chinni dhandu etc.. were organised. Singer Sparsha tried playing Kuntebile, Gautam sir tried his hand at Lagori and Pagade. These were the traditional experiences given to us by our students.

The cultural programme included Yakshagaana, Kamasale, Ummathaata, Veeragaase, Karaga, PataKunitha,etc performed by the students. DolluKunitha was performed by Karnataka Jaanapada Parishath team.Students enjoyed the programme whole heartedly.

The Practice

Principal formed the core committee for Janapada Suggi 2018 celebrated on 26 Feb 2019 consisting of

  • Convenor : Mrs Sudha H A, Department of Computer Science and Electronics
  • Joint Secretary : Dr Shilpa, Department of |Psychology
  • Treasurer: Mrs Rachana, Department of Commerce.

The core committee members along with Principal formed various other committees for the smooth conduct of the Suggi.

All the convenors along with Principal and senior staff discussed the Chief guests for the Suggi.

Mayor Gangambika Mallikarjun, Singer Sparsha, Chairperson Dr Ragini Narayan, Mr Madan Gopal, Trustee, BMS Educational Trust, and other management people were to be present.

Each of the above committees along with the members organised their event.

The Santhe Committee convenor and members arranged for vegetables and fruits stalls resembling a village where students dressed in traditional attire sold their fare.

The Stage Committee and members arranged the stage as a typical village scene on the stage and entrance.

The Hospitality committee arranged for the snacks and lunch for the guests.

Cultural Committee arranged for the choreographer to train the students in traditional folk art forms.

Students of the food stalls dressed in traditional costumes and decorated stalls sold food items prepared by them. They sold traditional food items.

Documentation team prepared a report of the event along with the photos.

The highlight of the Suggi, the procession was organised by the committee. Students dressed in various traditional attire of the state bought awareness of the festival to the general public.

The main of the Suggi was to bring awareness to the new generation students regarding the rich culture and various traditions of the state.

Evidence of success

It is published in Newspapers, YouTube videos, Telecasted in TV channels on the same day of the event

Financial support was given by management and sponsored by Allahabad Bank, Indian Overseas Bank etc
